Educational scope of the Environmental Education Action Plan for Sustainability (PAEAS)

The new plans proposed by the European Union and Spain for the transition towards a circular economy model entail a series of demanding challenges for the public and private sectors that are articulated, in the educational field, through new Curriculum Education policies.

IGNITE Serious Play, as a company committed to global sustainability, contributes its experience and knowledge to make this transformation possible: From Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to the Sustainability Plan.

El Environmental Education Action Plan for Sustainability (2021-2025), known as PAEAS, contains the strategic lines of environmental and sustainable education in Spain for the next 5 years, offering a coordinated framework to reinforce, from the mechanisms of social and cultural influence – communication, education, training and participation – those policies that must address climate and environmental challenges. Among the main objectives of this Plan, the drive aimed at strengthening the role of the environmental and sustainable education as a tool for the social, cultural and economic transformation that the climate and environmental emergency requires. Education is, as it has always been, an essential driver of social transformation, and Environmental Education for Sustainability (hereinafter, EAS), specifically, is called to play a relevant role. The EAS refers to all actions and processes of education and training, communication and participation aimed at developing learning, reflections, attitudes and competencies to act against the climate and environmental emergency, as well as the set of current complex socio-environmental challenges, advancing towards a just ecological transition.

All these tasks especially challenge large companies, administrations at all levels and organized and conscious citizens, in a process that goes beyond the change of discourse and that transforms the ways of doing things in all areas. In the current organization of centers, there are difficulties in the educational and training system to successfully address the challenges that we face in life on the planet and to build a culture of sustainability in the educational community. The traditional educational inertia and the management model of the centers do not favor the development of educational projects that delve into the Environmental Education for Sustainability (EAS) that is currently required. For this reason, the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MEFP) is developing the new LOMLOE curriculum in which it promotes education for sustainable development in a transversal way. Specifically, it promotes the acquisition of skills related to sustainable development and the prevention of occupational and environmental risks and professional responsibility.

Integration of sustainability into the educational system, through STEAM digital tools and gamification systems.

Due to its dimension and impact, the educational and training system constitutes one of the main instruments for the promotion and consolidation of a participatory, informed, trained and committed citizenry with respect and care for the environment. The entire educational and training system in the different territories and levels must integrate the EAS curricularly and promote the configuration of sustainable educational centers that can become an engine of ecological and social transformation of the environment of which they are part, articulating educational interventions that go more beyond those limited to schools, vocational training centers and universities, reaching the entire community. It is very important that the teachers and staff of the centers are sufficiently trained to incorporate the dimension of sustainability in all their professional activity.

The IGNITE Serious Play pedagogical teamThrough different training programs, it responds to the following objectives of the PEAS:

  1. Development of EAS projects with an interdisciplinary approach and generation of collaboration spaces in educational centers.
  2. Increase in training offer in the field of sustainability and incorporation of learning objectives, skills and complementary activities with sustainability.
  3. Incorporation of the EAS in the Center's Educational Project (PE).
  4. Design of varied activities, in STEAM contexts and diverse themes, where students apply their skills in implementing actions to transform and improve their school, physical and social environment.
  5. Coordination of STEAM activities and programs between educational centers and EAS facilities to establish synergies

In this new context, it is necessary to have expert support such as that provided by IGNITE Serious Play, incorporating its experience and the necessary technological tools, through specific educational programs. Specifically, its team of professionals has extensive knowledge in the integration of STEAM digital tools in extracurricular, complementary and curricular activities aimed at promoting the SDGs and Agenda 2030. We work on projects with our students, devising approaches with a positive impact on Sustainability through Robotics, Programming, 3D Design and Virtual Reality. Along these lines, as a transversal and multidisciplinary application to raise awareness about the importance of the SDGs, it is interesting to follow the project Health Guardians 2030, promoted by the Pfizer Foundation.
