Be competent in Artificial Intelligence

Strategies for teachers to be competent in AI

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has triggered an intense debate in education. Everyone seems to have valid opinions, as the industry continues to evolve at a rapid rate. We have moved from the typical educational conference, which put students at the center of learning, to a much more complex discussion about how to develop the educational model making good use of AI in schools. In this article we address the different phases that must be followed to become competent in AI and the benefits that innovative tools such as IGNITE Copilot can offer to the educational community.

The development of competence in AI

In 2023, our relationship with AI was still somewhat primitive, with a heavy reliance on chats and algorithms without proper verification of sources. However, a more critical approach to AI integration is emerging, recognizing that traditional search engines and chatbots have distinct roles.

Educational centers that have adopted AI have advanced through three phases:

Phase 1. Development of critical thinking

The first step to becoming proficient in AI is to develop critical thinking about the truthfulness of the answers. It is essential that students become aware of how to link information from different sources (Google, ChatGPT, Wikipedia, among others) to advance their ability to discern and evaluate the quality of the information.

Phase 2. Pedagogy of the question

The pedagogy of the question is essential in this context. It's about educating students to ask good questions, designing prompts or instructions with clear context, and interacting with intelligent bots in specific roles. This skill is similar to the Boolean searches we learned with Google, refining the ability to formulate effective queries.

3 Phase. Policies and protocols for the use of AI

Finally, schools must develop and implement policies and protocols that encourage responsible and competent use of AI for both teachers and students. These policies must be based on competencies aligned with the recommendations of experts such as Fengchun Miao, from UNESCO.

Opportunities with LOMLOE and innovative tools

The Organic Law of Modification of the LOE (LOMLOE) has opened the door for learning to be more competent, taking students from knowing to doing. This offers an ideal scenario for teachers to design AI-supported teaching sequences quickly and effectively.

IGNITE, a multidisciplinary team of educators and engineers, has developed a web solution called IGNITE Copilot. This generative tool overcomes the limited focus of traditional resources such as books, Google or Wikipedia.

IGNITE Copilot Key Benefits:

  1. Curriculum Didactic Design: Opens a range of possibilities for designing curricula and correcting assignments, allowing teachers to achieve the learning objectives established by law.
  2. Time saving: By optimizing the teaching process, you can reduce your workload by up to 20%, which is equivalent to approximately 10 hours per week.
  3. Humanization of the Classroom: The intuitive and pedagogically designed interface allows for more humanized teaching, enhancing the socio-emotional role of teachers.

IGNITE Copilot Key Benefits:

Becoming proficient in artificial intelligence is a pedagogical challenge, not merely an instrumental one. The teaching community must commit to the implementation of clear protocols and strategies to make effective use of AI. IGNITE Copilot, with its innovative and generative approach, is a tool that can help educators reach a new level of excellence in teaching, allowing for closer and more meaningful monitoring of the students' learning process.
